Lautoka cabbies to launch insurance scheme

April 5, 2016

TAXIDRIVERS in Lautoka will become the first in the country to be given death cover under an innovative insurance scheme.

The insurance cover, the first of its kind in the country, is being offered by New India Assurance.

Insurance agent Darrell Rajcharan unveiled the death benefit cover at the Fiji Taxi Association Lautoka branch annual general meeting held last Saturday.

“For the first time, taxidrivers will be given insurance cover that will pay out $13,000 upon their passing,” Mr Rajcharan explained.

“Of this amount, $3000 will be paid out immediately upon notice of death to cover funeral expenses and the remaining $10,000 will be given to the drivers’ immediate family.”

Mr Rajcharan said the cost of cover was only $70 a year or $5.85 a month.

Fiji Taxi Association assistant secretary and Lautoka branch president Mohammed Shameem said the scheme was affordable and would give drivers families some financial comfort during a very difficult time.

“This is a very positive step forward for our association and welcome news for all drivers in the country,’ he said.

The Fiji Taxi Association Lautoka branch will formalise an agreement with New India Assurance Co Ltd next week to launch the insurance scheme.
