THE fact that the ANZ Banking Group has appointed the former head of Google Australia as its new CEO shows the direction the bank is heading to.
Maile Carnegie was formerly the managing director of Google’s Australian operations since 2013 and will now take a leading position to head ANZ’s digital banking in what is described to be a multibillion-dollar technology arms race between banks.
ANZ acting country head for Fiji Saud Minam says Fiji and the Pacific are no exception as the country now has wide coverage on internet connectivity and smartphones.
“One of the big agent drives the bank is driving across is digitisation and we are the first bank that hired a very senior level lady from Google to take us in this direction,” said Mr Minam.
“More and more of our customers are doing internet banking and we are having smartphones for that now.”
He adds mortgages are something the bank is looking to exploit as well as personal loans and credit cards.
