Only 39 per cent of adult Samoans have a bank account, and efforts are underway to change that.
The Central Bank of Samoa, with technical assistance from the UN, is holding a two-day National Financial Inclusion Strategy Workshop in Apia at the moment.
The intention is to build an inclusive financial system that best serves all members of society, especially the low-income ones.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Samoa, Maiava Atalina Ainuu-Enari, says many people still put their cash under their mattresses, and that needs to change.
